HISTORY OF PATSHULL HALL

Patshull Hall is reputed as being the largest grade 1 listed building within the County, sitting within 80 acres of private gardens and woodland, spanning over 150 rooms and enjoying views across the south Staffordshire countryside. The Hall was built to designs by architect James Gibbs for Sir John Astley in about 1730 and took roughly 20 years to complete.

The Hall has changed hands multiple times over the years, most notably being sold to Baron Pigot in 1765 and subsequently William Legge, 5th Earl of Dartmouth in 1848. During the 20th century the Hall served as a rehabilitation centre in the 1940s and then until the 1980s as an orthopedic hospital. Some evidence of the Hall’s time as a hospital still remains with original doors being kept as an ode to the past.

Indeed during recent renovations, height measurements from 1830 were uncovered in one of the lower rooms and have been kept as a feature highlighting the Hall’s vast history. The Hall was purchased by its current owners in 2015 who have committed to lovingly restoring and celebrating the Hall and its historical beauty.

The Latin inscription above the main entrance reads “Simplex Munditis” which roughly translates to “Elegance in Simplicity”. This is a theme which the current owners like to run throughout the restoration of the Hall, keeping décor and furnishings simple and classic to highlight the breathtaking architecture, plasterwork and marble fireplaces.

Please note Patshull Hall Estate is a Private Estate. No visitors without prior arrangement. For all enquiries please contact us via the contact us page.

Hello, I along with my husband, purchased Patshull Hall in 2015 with the aim of returning it to a family home, as was its original intended purpose. We work closely with English Heritage, the local South Staffordshire Conservation Team and local craftspeople to restore the Hall as sympathetically as possible. As a couple we have been restoring properties since 2005 with a specific interest in listed buildings which has led us here to Patshull. The restoration of such a prominent local building takes many hours of planning, discussion to ensure its place in history for many years to come. We have been welcoming guests to stay here on the Estate since 2016 and love that people can enjoy this little slice of magical English countryside.
